Interdisciplinary Data Humanities

Learn how ITS is using data to amplify nontraditional research.

The goal of the Interdisciplinary Data Humanities Initiative (IDHI) is to foster more data-driven humanities research. At the ITS Research Computing Center, we want to cultivate an environment that makes advanced computational data tools available for researchers on campus in all fields of study.

What is Data Humanities?

Data humanities is the study of data-driven problems from a humanities perspective. Applications of data humanities include data representation, digital prosopography and networked humanities.

Why Focus on Data Humanities?

The goal of the initiative is to foster data-driven research in the humanities and provide support to individual projects via the installation and maintenance of humanities software and digital humanities educational materials. By doing this, we will create a foundation from which student-led and independent projects can emerge.

Approach

Through collaboration with University Libraries, the Florida Digital Humanities Consortium and other FSU departments, we are engaging the university in three main ways.

Supporting individual pilot projects by granting access to high performance computing resources to humanities research

Installing and maintaining software and educating researchers in different software platforms targeted to the humanities community

Establishing a learning environment to provide workshops, learning materials and related software to the student body and faculty members

Request Resources

If you would like to request any of the resources above (e.g., research consultations, in class lectures, etc.) for the Fall of 2024 or Spring of 2025 please fill out this survey and our team will reach out to you to schedule the appropriate resources.

Making History Accessible Online

Associate Professor Dr. Will Hanley in the FSU History Department is researching how to make historical materials more accessible. One of his ongoing projects is collaborating with the RCC to digitize the oldest English-language daily newspaper in the Middle East, The Egyptian Gazette.
