We Are IT | Meet Bryce Correa
Bryce Correa wasn’t planning on working in technology, but he landed an internship with the ITS Data & Analytics team during his junior year of college and never looked back. Now, as a business intelligence architect, he spends his days helping university departments understand and access their data. Outside of work, Bryce is obsessed with pro basketball and also enjoys cooking, baking and hanging out with his friends.
Where are you from?
I was born in Jacksonville and raised in Tallahassee. I have lived here most of my life.
Where did you attend school?
I went to Lincoln High School. After that I went to UCF. But I’m back here now.
Why did you choose to work in technology?
I was actually a finance major in school. I wasn't planning on working in IT or technology directly, but I knew I wanted to learn and pick up on some of those skills either way. At the end of my junior year, I was given the opportunity to intern on the ITS Data and Analytics Team. I really enjoyed it, and basically haven’t looked back since.
How long have you been at FSU?
I started in May 2021, so about a year and a half. I have been working full time for about six months.
What is your role at FSU?
We work with users a lot to understand their data and their needs. From there, it’s just a matter of finding the best approach for their situation. Every situation can be very different, so it’s not necessarily the same answer all the time. We have lots of different types of users, some know what they want already, and others may be at the very beginning. It really is just understanding where the user is at and figuring out what is the best approach for them.
We also create and maintain data and reports inside OBIEE, Power BI, Snowflake and university’s data warehouse. Lastly, we oversee the security part of OBIEE, Power BI and Snowflake.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
All of the different experiences we get. When I started, my immediate team was four people, and it has now grown to six in the past month or two. We get a lot of opportunities to learn and gain exposure to different technologies. If we were a larger team, we would probably be a lot more limited on what we were doing individually. So, all the learning opportunities are my favorite part.
What is the most rewarding project you have worked on at FSU?
Probably the first project I worked on. In that project, we created a new Snowflake database for the Office of Digital Learning and Academic Technologies. We pulled in data from different sources based on their needs. It wasn’t the most complicated project we have done, but it was very rewarding because it was the first project I got to take lead on and do the majority of it by myself.
What is your favorite app?
Probably YouTube. I mean, I could definitely spend a lot of time on YouTube just scrolling through different videos. That’s probably my most used app.
If you were to invent one piece of technology, what would it be?
Does it have to be new? Because I was thinking, if I had created the iPhone, I’d be pretty well off right now.
What is a fun fact about you?
I really like basketball, especially pro basketball. It’s my favorite sport. I’m obsessed with it. It’s basically the only thing I watch on TV.
Talk a little bit about your family.
I’m an only child. My mom has worked for FSU since I was young. My stepdad is a firefighter.
I have a cat, Bella. She is a lot. She’s sweet to me, but not so much to other people.
What do you do in your free time?
I like to hang out with my friends and girlfriend. I’m not too big on gaming, but I do play video games every once in a while. I also really like to cook. And I’ve been told I’m pretty good at baking too. I have a couple different go-to dishes. For breakfast I like to make quiche. I also make a pretty good meatloaf and have made Indian food a couple times.
