We Are IT | Meet Amber Dunlap

Amber Dunlap began her career at ITS 12 years ago as a Service Desk Technician after discovering her interest in technology through high school classes and later finding her path at Tallahassee State College. Today, as Program Coordinator for the ITS NCT Infrastructure group, Amber helps oversee daily operations and coordinate work requests and projects that support campus voice, data and security systems.
Where are you from?
I'm from Wakulla County, so I’m a lifelong local to the area.
Where did you attend school?
I graduated from Wakulla High School and continued my education at Tallahassee State College (formerly Tallahassee Community College), where I was initially enrolled in the Dental Hygiene program. I quickly realized that path wasn’t the right fit for me, which ultimately led me to pursue a career in technology.
Why did you choose to work in technology?
Throughout high school, I took several technology classes, and that interest really stuck with me. I enjoy that technology is constantly evolving—there’s always something new to learn, which keeps things interesting and challenging.
How long have you been at FSU?
12 years! My first role was an ITS Service Desk Technician.
What is your role at FSU ITS?
I serve as the Program Coordinator for the ITS NCT Infrastructure group. I help oversee daily operations and coordinate work requests and projects. Our team supports all network infrastructure on campus, including voice, data, and security systems.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
What I enjoy most is my team. I truly work with an incredible group of people, and I’m grateful to be part of ITS and the FSU community.
What is the most rewarding project you have worked on at FSU?
I think the most rewarding project I’ve been a part of is the implementation of our ITS Work Management system, AiM. Being involved in a system that helps organize, track, and improve how work gets done across campus was incredibly meaningful, especially knowing it continues to impact our daily operations and efficiency.
Another project that stands out is the Campus Infrastructure Rewire Project. Seeing that level of large-scale improvement—knowing our work directly supports reliable connectivity for students, faculty, and staff—made it especially rewarding. Both projects allowed me to contribute to something bigger than my day-to-day role and see the long-term impact of our work.
What is your favorite app?
My favorite app is ChatGPT—it’s a great tool for learning, problem-solving, and making everyday tasks a little easier.
If you were to invent one piece of technology, what would it be?
If I could invent one piece of technology, it would be a smart, adaptive system for people with cerebral palsy that combines mobility, communication, and therapy support into one seamless experience. Having a child with CP has shown me how much determination and potential are already there—technology just needs to catch up and meet them where they are.
What is a fun fact about you?
I asked my family for a fun fact about me and received nothing but roast material - so I’ll be sticking with ‘I’m one of six children in a blended family’ instead.
Talk a little about your family.
I’ve been married to my husband, Colby, for 10 years. We have one daughter, Estelle Roux (8), who has cerebral palsy and keeps life very exciting. What she lacks in mobility, she more than makes up for in personality and her million-dollar smile. We also have two sweet dogs, Haggard and Gus.
What do you do in your free time?
In my free time, my family and I enjoy riding adventures on our Polaris side-by-side. We love traveling to new places and have explored trails in Alabama, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, and throughout Florida. When I’m not riding, I enjoy taking care of my (very overcrowded) plant collection and gardening.
