RCC: Planned HPC Cluster Software Upgrade — Services Unavailable from Aug. 3–7, 2026

Thursday 02/12/2026

The Research Computing Center is planning to upgrade the FSU High Performance Compute (HPC) cluster software stack the week of August 3 - 7, 2026. During this time, the HPC and other services will be unavailable.

What's New

We are upgrading the cluster from AlmaLinux 8.6 to AlmaLinux v9.7. This upgrade comes with new versions of system-level Linux tools (e.g., text editors, version control, basic libraries, etc.) as well as several new compiler platform versions:

  • We are upgrading GNU GCC v8 to v11 and making v15 available.
    • We will continue to support v4 as long as possible.
  • We are upgrading Intel v21 to v25 and removing v15 and v16.
  • We are upgrading the NVHPC compilers to the latest version (currently 26.1)

Additionally, we are upgrading our job scheduler, Slurm, from v24.05 to the latest version (currently 25.11).

As with every platform upgrade, HPC users will likely need to test and recompile any code that relies on specific compiler versions. Our software team can assist if needed.

Affected Services

The following services will be unavailable during the maintenance period (first week of August 2026):

  1. High Performance Compute cluster
  2. Open OnDemand

The following services will remain ONLINE during the maintenance period:

  1. Parallel storage*
  2. Archival storage
  3. Globus data transfer
  4. REDCap
  5. Virtual machines for Research
  6. Data center services / Academic colocation

* Note: Parallel storage will be available exclusively through the storage export node (export.rcc.fsu.edu) and Globus, as our HPC login nodes will be offline.
