October 7 marks the start of the Second Annual ‘Discovery Days’ event hosted by the FSU Office of Research. This weeklong event aims to showcase the main research, creativity, and innovation initiates taking place at FSU. With a wide list of events to choose from, we have spotlighted 5 events all techies should consider attending.
Aging and Technology: Challenges and Opportunities
When: October 9 at 10:00 AM – 11:40 AM
Where: Tallahassee Senior Center (1400 N. Monroe St.)
Hosted by The Institute for Successful Longevity at FSU, the Aging and Technology: Challenges and Opportunities event hosts a discussion on the application of AI and technology in addressing human aging. With a word from special guest Dr. George Demiris (University of Pennsylvania) and panelists including Interim Director of the Institute for Successful Longevity Dr. Zhe He, Director of Claude Pepper Center Dr. Dawn Carr, Director of Pepper Institute of Aging and Public Policy Dr. Miles Taylor and Professor of Information Dr. Mia A. Lustria.

Discovery Challenge: FSU Startups Compete for Cash Prizes
When: October 9 at 3:00 PM – 5:00 PM
Where: Augustus B. Turnbull Conference Center (555 W. Pensacola St.)
Hosted on a Shark Tank style stage, the FSU Startup competition encourages FSU startups to pitch their company ideas for a chance at a cash prize. The event allows audience members to take the role of the Shark by deciding who they think should be awarded the People’s Choice Award.

Tour the New Interdisciplinary Research and Commercialization Building
When: October 8 at 2:00 PM– 4:00 PM
Where: Interdisciplinary Research and Commercialization Building (200 Levy Ave)
Take a peek at one of the newest additions coming to FSU campus, the Interdisciplinary Research and Commercialization Building. Located near the College of Engineering, this impressive building boasts an $88 million initiative to broaden the creative spirit and advancement amongst the FSU community. The building’s 116,000 square foot plan will be home to state of the art laboratories, core facilities and strategically placed collaboration spaces.
Tour guests are required to wear long pants and closed-toed shoes.
Tour spots are limited to 10 people per tour, with each tour lasting 1 hour.

Celebrating Women in Science and Leadership: Inspiring the New Generation
When: October 11 at 9:00 AM
Where: FSU Student Union Ballrooms (75 N. Woodward Ave)
The event aims to empower and celebrate the achievements of women in roles of leadership within FSU’s scientific community. The event will host a panel of speakers including First Lady Jai Vartikar, Vice President for Research Stacey Patterson, National High Magnetic Field Laboratory Director Kathleen Amm among others.
Registration for the event is required. Breakfast will be included.

President’s Showcase for Undergraduate Research Excellence
When: October 10 at 5:30 PM – 7:30 PM
Where: FSU Student Union Ballrooms (75 N. Woodward Ave)
Hosted by the Office of President and the Center for Undergraduate Research and Academic Engagement (CRE), the Presidential Showcase of Undergraduate Research Excellence spotlights original student research through poster and oral presentation. The spotlighted students are recipients of the IDEA Grants program, financing the continuation of their research initiatives. These students share the university’s mission of nurturing independent thinkers and creating solutions that enrich both our campus and larger communities.
