Achieving Excellence: Inside the FSU Testing Center's Proctoring Success

Friday 10/18/2024

The FSU Testing Center is recognized for its demonstrated mastery of testing industry best practices and adherence to the highest accepted standards and procedures for academic integrity. Certified by the National College Testing Association, the Testing Center operates under the leadership of the ITS Office of Digital Learning and Academic Technologies. Serving the FSU campus community by providing secure, in-person proctored testing for high-stakes and distance learning course exams, the facility also administers specialty exams such as CLEP and Certiport professional certification tests.

In the 2023-2024 academic year, the observed cheating rate for exams proctored in the FSU Testing Center was just 0.05%. Out of 95,614 course exams administered during that period, the facility reported 45 cheating incidents. Unauthorized use of a secondary device (eg, mobile phone) comprised 20% of those incidents, and 75% were due to students consulting unauthorized notes or material during their exam. For perspective on how the Testing Center’s cheating rate compares to cheating in general, according to ongoing research, more than 60% of university students admit to cheating in some form, with 32% saying they have cheated on an exam.*

With a 262-seat capacity that can expand to over 350 to accommodate peak testing seasons (eg, final exam week), the Testing Center administers between 3,500 to 12,000 exams per week. A highly trained team of proctors provides on-the-floor visual monitoring of testers, as well as video surveillance via 60 high-definition, fisheye cameras that allow a 360-degree view of each testing station.

“While we’re proud of the work we do to ensure academic integrity at the Testing Center, we’re equally committed to creating a comfortable experience for our testers."

Robert Fuselier, Senior Director of the ITS Office of Digital Learning and Academic Technologies

Robert Fuselier adds, “Because testing in a proctored environment can be anxiety-inducing for students, our team strives to balance proctoring integrity with a welcoming and service-oriented culture.”

Student surveys from the Spring 2024 semester indicate the Testing Center does just that. Despite noise and activity from stadium construction where the facility is located, 559 students surveyed said they felt comfortable while testing in the facility, and 799 commented on the professionalism of the staff.

With its ongoing dedication to creating a secure and welcoming environment, the FSU Testing Center serves a vital role in ensuring the academic integrity of high-stakes assessment at FSU. Learn more about the FSU Testing Center at https://testing.fsu.edu.
