Overview
Every device that connects to the internet—laptops, cellphones, servers, gaming consoles—has a unique Internet Protocol (IP) address that identifies the device. Think of it as the phonebook of the internet. At FSU, ITS uses DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) to assign IP addresses. These IP addresses are assigned automatically from a defined range of numbers whenever a device connects to an FSU wired or wireless network. University departments may request an expanded range of numbers for IP addresses or static IP addresses that remain constant for particular devices.
