Modernizing FSU's Digital Identity

Building a secure, efficient future together.

Security works best when it aligns with the needs of our community. In the Spring of 2024, Information Technology Services (ITS) began a comprehensive assessment of our identity systems. We didn't do this alone; we partnered with units across campus to analyze existing policies and business processes, listening closely to the challenges you face.

Your feedback shaped our path forward. The objective was to design a roadmap not just for better technology, but for a solution that solves real operational friction.

What is changing?

Establishing the foundation for modern identity management.

FSU has selected Fischer Identity to power this transformation. This choice was reached through a collaborative competitive solicitation (ITN) process, where representatives from key administrative and academic offices evaluated solutions alongside ITS to ensure the selected tool met the diverse needs of our university.

With 80% of their customer base in Higher Education, Fischer’s solution is uniquely tailored to the complex needs of an environment like ours. This project is about more than just software; it is about building a unified identity fabric. We are constructing the central infrastructure necessary to automate the entire identity lifecycle. This means moving toward a future where access is granted, updated, and revoked instantly as users join, move, or leave the university.

Why is it changing?

Efficiency, Scalability, and Speed.

The digital landscape is shifting, and our systems must evolve to support a modern campus. According to the 2025 Crowdstrike Global Threat Report, identity-based intrusions now make up 35% of cloud incidents. To protect FSU, we must evolve.

  • To Streamline Access: We are moving toward a system where access is delivered at the speed of business, reducing the administrative burden on departments.
  • To Modernize Operations: By adopting a cloud-native architecture, we ensure our systems are scalable, resilient, and always up to date without the need for heavy on-premise maintenance.
  • To Empower the Community: We are laying the groundwork for a smoother, more intuitive experience for faculty, staff, and students to manage their profiles and request access to the tools they need.

Key Capabilities

Central Identity Warehouse

A single, unified view of all university identities.

Enhanced Auditing & Compliance

A centralized system to track access history, ensuring FSU can meet the increasing demands of audits and regulatory standards.

Future-Ready Automation

The architecture required to replace manual processing with intelligent, automated workflows.

Project Roadmap

Phase 1: Assessment & Strategy

We partnered with campus units and external experts (KeyData) to analyze existing policies, identify friction points, and design a strategy that aligns with FSU's needs.

Phase 2: Solution Selection

We conducted a collaborative ITN process involving administrative and academic partners to select the best technology for the university.

Phase 3: Implementation

We are now preparing to deploy the new Identity Governance and Administration (IGA) solution and build the Unified Identity Fabric.

Phase 3 Schedule: What to Expect

A closer look at the implementation steps launching this Spring, with a target completion date of Fall 2026.

Upcoming: Discovery & Design

Collaborative Planning

We will engage with business and technical stakeholders to map our data and refine our processes.

Goal: Finalize the system design to ensure it meets the unique needs of our campus partners.

Followed By: Solution Construction

Environment Build-Out

Our technical teams will begin building the integrations and configuring the new cloud environment.

Focus: Establishing secure connections and creating the initial lifecycle workflows.

Testing: User Acceptance Testing

Validation & Quality Assurance

We will validate the system directly with our campus partners.

Focus: Ensuring the user interface is intuitive and the data flows are accurate before we go live.

Launch: Migration & Go-Live

Production Deployment

The final move to the production environment.

Focus: Secure data migration and the official launch of the new identity platform.

How to Prepare

Users who will be directly affected by these changes will be notified of any actionable steps. If you interact directly with the current IAM systems, administer user set-up or manage access requests, you can expect to receive detailed information outlining changes or actions that need to be taken.

Support

If you have questions or need assistance with IAM, please contact the IAM project team at IAM-Project@fsu.edu.
