FSU competes against 11 other Florida schools in virtual Cyberween game

Wednesday 10/08/2025

FSU ITS is teaming up with 11 other Florida universities to take cybersecurity to an exciting new level and encourage online safety among students, faculty and staff.

Previously known as Cyber Bowl, the Cyberween online game is designed to test students’ and employees’ defense against cyberthreats. Players enter a virtual haunted house and take on five cybersecurity scenarios, ranging from phishing emails to credit card fraud, to help their school bring home the cybersecurity championship.

“This year’s Cyberween promises to be incredibly exciting! One of our key goals is to raise awareness about the risks people face in today’s digital landscape,” said Bill Hunkapiller, FSU Chief Information Security Officer.

As the cybersecurity industry bolsters its defenses with advanced technologies and artificial intelligence, many bad actors are turning to social engineering tactics. Users should be extra vigilant about the authenticity of communications, including links, text messages and phone calls.

This year, Cyberween runs from October 20 - 31. At the end of the competition, the school with the highest amount of participation from current students and employees will take the title of the 2025 Cybersecurity Champion. All are welcome to play, but current FSU students, faculty and staff have a chance to win big prizes. Those who play are entered into a grand prize drawing to win one of two $500 FSU tuition student scholarships or a pair of tickets to the FSU vs Virginia Tech football game at Doak Campbell Stadium on November 15 for a faculty or staff participant.

In addition to the Cyberween virtual game, ITS will be hosting a number of training courses throughout the month of October. These trainings include:

October 7 | Generative AI with CrowdStrike

October 8 | Stranger Threats: Navigating the Upside Down of Higher Ed Cyber Threats with CrowdStrike

October 9 | FSU Basic Cybersecurity Training

October 14 | FSU Incident Response Plan

October 21 | Digital Native or Digital Naïve? Raising a Savvy Cyber Generation presented by Ben Halpert
