Richard R. Burnette III, PhD

Associate Provost for Strategy and Analytics and Interim CIO

Rick Burnette is serving as the Interim CIO. He is the associate vice president for academic affairs and institutional data administrator at Florida State University where he has spent 32 of his 36 years in higher education. He is an intrapreneur who has been actively involved in institutional change via data empowerment, strategic planning, institutional research, enrollment management, student success, information management, technology and through his leadership of the Campus Reimagined Initiative. Rick is recognized as one of FSU's leading technologists who resides outside of central IT. He is on the IT Governance Council, is leading the Data Governance team. Dr. Burnette earned a PhD in Educational Psychology – Learning and Cognition, a program that has prepared him well for his varied experiences.

Rick has been a leader of the data-informed student success effort at FSU for the past 20 years. He is credited with bringing CRM and enterprise business intelligence to the university in the early 2000s, with the latter earning him and FSU recognition as a finalist in the 2006 ComputerWorld Honors Program. More recently, he spearheaded the Take 15 Initiative at FSU, the implementation of the strategic plan, and the strategic management of metrics associated with statewide performance and preeminence funding that played a part in FSU's #18 Public University ranking in the 2020 U.S. News Best Colleges Rankings.

Rick is the immediate past president of the Southern Association for Institutional Research (SAIR) and serves on the Executive Committee of APLU's Commission on Information, Measurement, and Analysis (CIMA).
