Web Content Management System
Information Technology Services has implemented eZ Publish, an open source Web Content Management System.
A Web Content Management System (WCMS) is a tool for managing the content of a website. As opposed to a static site, a CMS-based web site is often referred to as a database-driven site. This is because the content is stored in a database, independently of the design templates.
At the time a user clicks a link, the server combines a page within the site, the content from the database, and the design from the templates into a web page. The Web CMS allows any authorized user who can fill out a form on a web page to make changes to the website.
A Web CMS typically allows users to perform the following tasks through a browser interface:
- Create new pages
- Edit existing pages
- Remove pages
- Move pages
- Add/modify images and files
- Add/modify forms and lists
- Copy and paste content from a word processing application
- Format content using a combination of templates and WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) editing
- and more
Because the design is controlled by a template, the user does not have to know how to FTP content to a server, or how to code HTML.
