ResHall Network Policy

An Access Control List (ACL) is applied to the residence hall router interface inbound from off campus to restrict heavy traffic from off campus. Traffic between the residence halls and main campus have no restrictions.
Below are the policies and restrictions in the residence halls:
1. Allows any inbound traffic that is a response to sessions initiated from within the residence halls.
2. Permits FTP data inbound.
3. Permits Popular Instant Messaging originating from outside FSU:

  • MSN Messenger -ichat
  • Yahoo! Messenger -ichat
  • AOL instant messenger
  • Global Chat (was iChat)
  • Common IRC

4. Denies everything else inbound, INCLUDING:

  • Peer-to-Peer File Sharing (BitTorrent, Gnutella, Ares, Shareaza, BearShare, Kazaa, etc.)
  • Standard illegal IP network spoofing
  • SNMP probing
  • Microsoft NetBIOS
  • Servers(i.e. mail servers, FTP servers, DHCP servers, etc.)
  • VPN (inbound only)
